What are the Meals like?

The on-board chef freshly prepares all meals. From a buffet-style continental breakfast, with pastries and breads from on-land boulangeries (baker shops), to locally-sourced regional specialities for an alfresco lunch on deck, or a four-course gourmet candlelit dinner.

Many boats offer an opportunity for the guests to accompany the chef to the market one day to help choose and select from the vast range of fresh products on offer.

Can my Dietary Requirements be managed?

All dietary requirements and specific requests can be accommodated, given sufficient notice.

What type of Cuisine is there on board?


The chefs tailor menus to individual preferences and requests, based on the cuisine of the region and seasonality. The best quality and freshest ingredients possible are sourced in the local markets, in order to deliver an elegant,sophisticated and gourmet dining experience.

Can I order a la carte?

All the Afloat in France boats offer a table d'hôte menu of the very highest quality. Menus are however discussed on-board with passengers in advance. Any preferences or requests are catered for, where possible and with sufficient notice.

Is there WiFi, Internet and TV on board?

All Afloat in France boats have internet provision via mobile WiFi connections. Connectivity is dependent upon signal availability and strength at the given location.

All boats ( except Napoleon ) have wide screen TV's situated in the boats' main salon. There are on-board DVD libraries. The Napoleon has DVD players available for viewing in cabins.

What if I become ill on board? Medical services

There is a first aid kit and designated first aider on-board. In the unlikely event of an emergency, or a more routine medical need, there is a bi-lingual guide accompanying the journey who will assist in finding appropriate medical assistance, whether at a pharmacy or with a doctor or hospital visit.

Is Smoking allowed on board?

Smoking is not permitted inside any Afloat in France vessel. It is allowed outside on the decks, with consideration taken for the comfort of other passengers.

Are Pets allowed?

What is the Dress Code on board?

The atmosphere on board Afloat in France boats is relaxed. For dinner, appropriate dress is 'smart casual'. Formal wear is not required.

It is advisable to wear flat low-heeled shoes on the deck areas.

Spring and Autumn can be cool at times; it is advisable to pack a sweater and light rain coat.

How much do I give for Tips/Gratuities?

Gratuities are not included in the price and are entirely given at the clients discretion. Any gratuities received are equally distributed throughout the crew.

Mobility issues

Wherever possible, Afloat in France accommodate and make comfortable people with mobility issues. The nature of a barging holiday requires a certain level of mobility in order to access the vessels fully.

This optimum degree of mobility varies according to each Afloat in France boat. Please contact us - individual client's circumstances can then be discussed.

Does the boat travel at night?

The Afloat in France journeys as planned do not involve the boats cruising at night. Canal locks often close at dusk, when vessels will be moored for the evening and overnight.

Can the windows in the suites be opened?

There are windows in all the cabins that open.

Windows on lower decks must be closed when the boat is moving.

Napoleon - lower deck windows must remain closed at all times (unless specific permission is given by the Captain).

Do you have cots for Babies?

With sufficient notice, all needs of younger passengers can be catered for. From specially prepared meals, cots, highchairs, bike seats etc. Get in touch.

What are the Child Fares?

Are there Laundry facilities?

There are no passenger laundry facilities on-board. In the case of urgent need or by prior arrangement, small amounts of laundry can be done.

How much Luggage space is there on-board?

All Afloat in France boats have ample space for you to unpack cases. There are designated areas for the storage of empty baggage.

Can I buy Gifts on-board?

There are no gift shops on-board. Many excursions allow both time and opportunity to buy mementos and presents.

Are there Books, Magazines and Games on-board?

Most Afloat in France boats have a small library of English language books to borrow.

Popular magazines for a variety of tastes and interests are available. Tell us if you would like to read a specific publication or author, or enjoy a specific board game e.g. chess, backgammon or Scrabble.

What is the Electricity on-board?

The Afloat in France boats operate on 220 vaults AC with 2-pin plugs. Plug adaptors and converters are available if you have not brought your own.

Are there Safes in the cabins?

The Afloat in France luxury riverboats have a secure area in which to leave valuables. Cabins on some boats have a small safe. Each boat also has a safe in the Captain's quarters.

Is there Air - Conditioning on-board?

Afloat in France cabins have individually-controlled air-conditioning.

Are the Afloat in France boats secure?

There is always a member of the crew on-board and on duty.

At night the boats are locked and secured.
