St-Léger-sur-Dheune to Dijon

Along the Canal du Centre and River Saône, find wonderful architecture and gastronomic delights.

7 Days / 6 Nights

Day One. Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune. Board the barge at Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune for your culinary cruise through Burgundy. Enjoy a welcome champagne reception and a chance to meet the crew. Later in the evening your first gastronomic dinner, prepared on board by your private chef, is served.

Day Two: Cruise to Chagny along the Canal du Centre. You may wish to alight and take a stroll or cycle along the towpath. Late morning, your Belmond guide will meet you at one of the locks for a short, scenic ride to the picturesque wine village of Pernand-Vergelesses. This is home to one-Michelin-starred restaurant Le Charlemagne, where you will participate in an exclusive cooking class with masterchef Laurent Peugeot, who is renowned for his exceptional Asian-inspired French cuisine. After this memorable experience you visit the 18th-century Château de Chamirey, a wine estate in Mercurey run by the Devillard family. Enjoy a tour of the vineyards followed by a guided visit to the property and wine cellar and a tasting of the exquisite Premier Cru wines. A scenic drive takes you back to Belmond Hirondelle in time for cocktails.

Day Three: Cruise to Fragnes. This morning, relax on board or explore by foot or bicycle as the barge meanders along the Canal du Centre towards the pretty village of Fragnes. Lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, your guide will take you by minivan to the town of Chalon-sur-Saône, where you have a chance to stroll around the historic centre and visit the shops. Chalon, the second largest town in Burgundy after Dijon, was first mentioned over 2000 years ago during Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars. It has since been an important trading post and commercial centre, served by the River Saône. Head to St Vincent Square to soak up the local atmosphere, perhaps in one of the attractive pavement cafés. Tonight’s dinner will be at a renowned, Michelin-rated restaurant, accompanied by superb local wines.

Day Four: Cruise to Saint-Jean-de-Losne. This morning visit the delightful town of Beaune and enjoy a sumptuous tasting with the famous cheese maker, Alain Hess. Plunge into the famous market with culinary expert Marjorie from The Cook’s Atelier and choose some local, seasonal produce. Then return to Marjorie’s kitchen to conjure up a delicious lunch, accompanied by specially selected wines. Afterwards visit the famous Hôtel-Dieu, a magnificent 15th-century building that was once a charitable hospital, part of the Hospices de Beaune. Behind its gothic façade, beautiful tiled roofs and flamboyant colours you will discover stunning collections of furniture, paintings and objets d’art. Return to the barge in Seurre for a scenic late afternoon cruise along the River Saône to Saint-Jean-de-Losne, the barging capital of France. During the cruise Chef will teach you how to make a classic boeuf bourguignon.

Day Five: Cruise to Longecourt. This morning the barge leaves the river and enters the Burgundy Canal. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs on the towpath, or you may wish to help Chef in the galley as he prepares a picnic lunch. This alfresco feast is enjoyed in the surroundings of 12th-century Château de Longecourt, where you also enjoy a private visit to the charismatic owner’s home. Your next exciting stop is the historic Clos de Vougeot, where Cistercian monks first began making wine in the 12th century. The splendid château is now the headquarters of the celebrated Burgundian wine society, the Confrérerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and boasts a cellar and wine presses dating from the medieval era. Rejoin the barge in a tranquil setting near Longecourt, our mooring for the night.

Day Six: Cruise to Dijon. Today your guide takes you on a walking tour of historic Dijon, capital of the great Dukes of Burgundy. Visit the Ducal Palace, the Grey Poupon mustard shop and browse the sensational stalls at the covered food market, soaking up the delightful aromas, flavours and colours of the local produce. Lunch on board will be based on specialities picked up at the market and will include mouthwatering Burgundy delicacy jambon persillé with an array of different mustards. Tonight the barge moors in the port of Dijon. As Chef prepares your farewell gala dinner, perhaps indulge in a kir, an aperitif blending the locally produced cassis (blackcurrant) liqueur, with aligoté white wine.

Day Seven: Dijon. After breakfast the crew bids you farewell before you alight from the barge for your onward travel arrangements.

Please note: This itinerary is subject to availability and is for guidance only, a confirmed schedule will be supplied with your travel documents. Prices are based on minimum occupancy, please be advised that supplements may apply.
