Accommodation

Itineraries 2022/2023

Lyon to St Jean de Losne

Meander the Rhône Valley, taste fine wines and delectable local specialities

7 Days / 6 Nights

Day 1. Board Belmond Napoleon in Lyon and meet your crew for a champagne reception. Enjoy evening cocktails as we sail the River Saône, before dining on superb cuisine accompanied by the finest vintages.

Day 2. Breakfast is followed by a tour of Lyon this morning. As France’s second city Lyon is a vibrant hub of culture, history and gastronomy. Visit the ornate Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière with your guide for an exclusive tour, then spend the morning exploring the city’s renowned boutiques and charming pavement cafes. On your return to the barge we set sail for Montmerle as you enjoy a lunch.

Day 3. Today we take a short drive to Odenas to enjoy the best of the Beaujolais with a wine tasting at Chateau de la Chaize. Back on board the barge as we cruise to Mâcon during lunch. Take a short walk on shore in the afternoon to visit the Roche de Solutré an imposing geological formation with unrivalled views across Mâcon’s sprawling vineyards and the River Saône. We moor in Mâcon later this evening, a thriving market town nestled between the Mâconnais and Beaujolais vineyards.

Day 4. Breakfast is served as we wind pass stunning views of Southern Burgundy on our way to Tournus. This afternoon step ashore at Cluny to visit the Benedictine Abbey, a vast, Romanesque masterpiece. Tour the abbey and grounds with your guide to discover the beauty of what was once the world’s largest church. The evening is spent at leisure as we make our way to our mooring in the pretty town of Tournus. Cruise to Viviers and admire the beauty of the Rhône Valley from the deck. Disembark mid-afternoon for a guided walk around this charming medieval town. Return to Belmond Napoleon to play the traditional Provençal game pétanque.

Day 5. Cruise to Chalon-sur-Saône, with a stop in Beaune. Lunch in a charming local restaurant in the heart of the city, before visiting the Hotel Dieu, a magnificent 15th century charity hospital steeped in local history. Then on to explore Joseph Drouhin’s cellar, where the King of France and Duke of Burgundy used to store their favourite wines. A gastronomic dinner awaits on board as we continue on our way to Chalon.

Day 6. This morning your guide hosts a walking tour of Chalon-sur-Saône. Discover a vibrant atmosphere at market day, the cathedral square boasts a variety of stalls for you to explore. Return to the barge as we continue along the River Saône for our final mooring in St Jean de Losne. Upon arrival wander over to the port and admire the many working pleasure barges as chef prepares a farewell feast for your final evening on board.

Day 7. Have breakfast before the crew bids you farewell and you disembark for your onward travel arrangements.

St Jean-de-Losne to Lyon

Discover the beautiful chateaux and picture-perfect villages along the River Saône as you journey to Lyon, France’s second city.

Day 1. Board the barge in St-Jean-de-Losne for your cruise through Burgundy along the River Saône.A champagne reception welcomes you on board and provides the perfect chance to meet your crew.Soak up the serene atmosphere of the river with a cocktail cruise. Later that evening, enjoy your first dining experience on board.

Day 2. This morning enjoy the scenery on deck as you weave downstream to the pretty market town of Chalon-sur-Saône.After a delicious lunch on board disembark to visit Beaune, the historic wine capital of Burgundy. Take a private tour of the magnificent 15th-century Hotel-Dieu, a decorated charity hospital which encapsulates the history of the region.Explore the charming town and its shops at leisure, with a chance to visit Joseph Drouhin's cellar. It was once used by the King of France and the Duke of Burgundy to store their wines.

Day 3. After breakfast relax on board and savour the natural beauty as you journey to Tournus.Lunch is served on board before you take a scenic drive to the famous Abbaye de Cluny, for centuries the largest church in the world. The whole town was originally enclosed by fortifications, two of which remain today.This evening dinner is served at a charming local Michelin-starred restaurant.

Day 4. Your cruise continues to Mâcon this morning, a thriving market town bordering Mâconnais and Beaujolais vineyards.Enjoy lunch on board before disembarking to visit the Roche de Solutré, a picturesque site with superb views. Stop along the route to enjoy a wine tasting session in the village of Fuissé.

Day 5. This morning take time to wander around Mâcon before the barge leaves for Montmerle-sur-Saône. Your chef will serve another fine lunch as you cruise along the river.Later your guide will accompany you to the magnificent Château de Fléchères. Built in 1630 and set in 80 acres of parkland, take a private tour of this historic house and explore the grounds at your leisure.On return, a late afternoon cruise takes us to the little town of Neuville-sur-Saône where we moor for the night.

Day 6. An early morning cruise takes us to our final destination—Lyon, the second city of France.Lyon is a cultural, historic, gastronomic, and commercial centre. Dominating the city is the splendidly ornate Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.Your guide will take you on a walking tour split across the morning and afternoon, with lunch served back on board. You will discover the hidden ‘traboules’ of the old town, the roman ruins and the spectacular painted walls. There will also be time at leisure to explore the many great boutiques, renowned for their quality products.Back on board, enjoy a farewell feast, specially created by the chef.

Avignon to Tain L'Hermitage

Discover grand Roman ruins amid picturesque villages as you sample the Rhone’s finest wines.

7 days/6 nights

Day 1. Step aboard and meet your crew and guide for a champagne reception. In the late afternoon, cruise to Arles. Dine on regional specialities at your first fantastic feast on the river. After dinner tour Arles, famous for its Roman ruins. Van Gogh also stayed here from 1888 to 1889.

Day 2. Visit the traditional 18th-century Provencal bastide in St Rémy for an olive oil tasting. Relax as you cruise to Avignon past the famous Pont Saint-Bénezet. Moor opposite the city gates then visit the spectacular Roman Pont du Gard aqueduct. Enjoy drinks on deck and a sumptuous dinner.

Day 3. Tour Avignon, home to the Popes of Avignon in the 1300s. Enjoy a guided walk around this magnificent city and the Palace of the Popes. Take time to peruse the shops or sample French cafe culture at your leisure. Return to the barge for lunch, then visit the world-famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard. Enjoy a wine tasting here before continuing your cruise to Saint-Etienne-des-Sorts village.

Day 4. Tour the Roman city of Orange, built in 100BC and discover two of the finest Roman monuments in Europe. Cruise to Viviers, passing through the Bollène lock, with its dramatic 23-metre drop. Take a leisurely stroll around this medieval town.

Day 5. Visit Nyons, a typical Provençal village and visit a lavender distillery and 18th-century olive mill. Have lunch at the picturesque village of Grignan, famed for its medieval château. Continue to a truffle farm to learn about and taste this world-renowned delicacy. Join the barge at Le Pouzin and cruise to La Voulte.

Day 6. Visit a colourful market in La Voulte with your chef. Pick out ingredients for lunch, which will be prepared for you back on board. Cruise past the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône to Tain or Tournon. Visit Chez Ferraton, whose winery is a stroll away, and enjoy a tasting and tour. Back on board dine on a wonderful farewell gala dinner.

Day 7. Have breakfast aboard Belmond Napoleon before the crew bids you farewell and you disembark.

Tain L'Hermitage to Avignon

See the beauty of the Rhône Valley, follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps and enjoy pétanque.

Day 1.Board the barge at Tain L'Hermitage or Tournon and get to know the crew over a champagne reception. This evening you are joined by a local sommelier who will introduce you to the Northern Rhone Valley wines. Later, dine on superb cuisine accompanied by France's finest wines.

Day 2. Cruise to Viviers while watching the beautiful Rhone Valley glide by. Enjoy a guided walk this charming medieval town in the mid-afternoon. Return to the barge and play the traditional Provencal game and petanque.

Day 3. Enjoy a scenic drive the Provencal village of Grignan for a tour of the medieval chateau followed by a visit a local truffle farm to learn about and taste this world-renowned delicacy. Lunch is at a delightful local restaurant. Back on board, cruise south to Saint-Etienne-des-sorts. Pass through the Bollene lock, with its dramatic 23-metre drop.

Day 4. today visit the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where you'll enjoy a session of wine tasting. Lunch is served on board as you cruise to Avignon, past the famous bridge Pont Saint- Benezet. Moor opposite the gates to city then visit the spectacular Roman Pont du Gard aqueduct.

Day 5. Tour Avignon, which was home to the Popes of Avignon in the 1300s. Enjoy a walk around the walled city, as well as the palace of the popes. Take time to persue the shops or sample French cafe culture. Lunch is served back on Belmond Napoleon as you cruise to Aries. Explore the village of Les Baux-de-Provence before dining on board.

Day 6. Tour Aries, home of Van Gogh from 1888 to 1889. Enjoy lunch as you cruise back to Avignon. Disembark to visit Saint-Remy, birthplace of Nostradamus and also home to Van Gogh. In the evening have a magnificent farewell gala dinner and trade stories with your fellow travellers.

Day 7. Have breakfast aboard Belmond Napoleon before the crew bids you farewell and you disembark.
