Classic Alsace Cruise
Krafft to Arzviller
or in reverse
Sunday, Day 1 Krafft. Your Belmond Afloat in France guide greets you at the pre-arranged meeting point and escorts you to the barge in Krafft. Once on board, your journey begins in effervescent style with a welcome reception and a chance to get to know the Captain and crew. This is followed by a sumptuous dinner prepared by your private chef.
Monday, Day 2 Strasbourg. After enjoying a breakfast of local specialties you disembark for a tour of one of the Alsace region’s fabled vineyards Sipp Mack which produces some of the area’s finest organic wine. After touring the vineyard and wine tasting return to the barge for a gourmet lunch and a leisurely afternoon’s sailing to Strasbourg. Relax and soak up the beauty of the French countryside, meandering past rows of elegant plane trees and dappled emerald foliage. Dinner is served onboard before you have the opportunity to explore Strasbourg at night.
Tuesday, Day 3 Hochfelden. Today, after breakfast, you alight for a guided walking tour of Strasbourg. Visit the soaring, red Vosges sandstone cathedral, described by Victor Hugo as “a prodigy of the gigantesque and the delicate”, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, set in a spectacular glass edifice on the river, and the botanical garden, the second oldest in France, which is home to nearly 6000 plant species. Return to the barge for lunch and cruise to Hochfelden on the picturesque Marne au Rhin Canal. Dinner is served on board.
Wednesday, Day 4 Saverne. Today’s morning itinerary takes you to Meteor Brewery, the oldest brewing site in France, which has been family-owned for seven generations. A guided tour gives you an insight into the brewing process, after which you are invited to try some of the 12 beers crafted on site, including the Médaille d’Or-winning Pils. Return to the boat for lunch and enjoy an afternoon cruise to Saverne, former headquarters of the Prince-Bishops. During the sedate cruise it is possible to alight from the barge and walk or cycle along the towpath. In the evening an elegant cocktail reception is held in the gardens of 18th-century Château des Rohan with entertainment from local jazz musicians. The delights continue with an epicurean dinner served back on board.
Thursday, Day 5 Lutzelbourg. This morning set off to explore part of the famous Route des Vins and visit Domaine Mochel where the family has been making wine for eight generations. Following a guided tour, you will be treated to a tasting of the finest labels. Return to the barge for lunch and an afternoon cruise to Lutzelbourg. The landscape dramatically changes as the boat cuts its way through the Vosges Mountains. This evening you are dining privately at the Michelinstarred Villa René Lalique, former country home of the visionary art deco jeweller and glassmaker and now a luxurious hotel and restaurant.
Friday, Day 6 Arzviller. The medieval ruin of Lutzelbourg Castle is our destination this morning. Set on a promontory high above the canal, it is the perfect spot to enjoy a morning-tea picnic and spectacular views. Return to the barge for lunch and enjoy an afternoon’s tranquil cruising to Arzviller, perhaps alighting to walk or pedal alongside the boat. The barge moors by the famous Arzviller Boat Lift, a 45 metre-high engineering marvel that replaced a flight of 17 locks in 1969. Tonight you can toast the end of a great adventure at the Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.
Saturday, Day 7 Arzviller. Disembark after breakfast and proceed to your drop-off point.
